Gerry Larkin and his enthusiastic band of helpers from the hinterland of Abbey did themselves and their village & parish proud with their organisational efforts today (17 March) in running the first Abbey 10KM Road Race.

Over 150 toed the line with the men's winner coming home a little under 37 and a half minutes later, Stuart Moloney of Mooreabbey Milers, but originally from much closer to Abbey I'm reliably told.  The women's winner was a few minutes after that, Caroline Whiriskey of Loughrea AC, another child of a neighbouring parish.

The weather stayed dry, but only just, with the wind playing puck over the first 4KM of a pretty challenging course.  Our own Deirdre Quinn checked out the course, running it as a warm-up, and doing it in almost an identical time immediately afterwards. Gearoid Rohan was close to 40 minutes and didn't look too bothered coming through a little over 40 minutes.  Pat McDonagh was joint 8th with his neigbour Declan Donnelly, both of whom were best local man.

Good to see GCH's Danny Carr and Bernie Kelly (both 11 year stalwarts of the Fields 10Km) back in some form again after almost a year of injury on both their parts.

Full provisional result is attached.

Onwards to Craughwell!
