National Combined Events review 2011
2011 was the start for new combined events coaching team and a rejuvenated squad. In total eight squad sessions took place in a variety of locations nationwide. As the year progressed the squad grew and midway a national standard was published for qualification to the squad. Athletes responded well to this and interest grew as the intent of the national coaches became evident.
Excellent direction and coaching for athletes and their personal coaches was available to all at each national squad. The interaction and contribution of personal coaches was very helpful and created a workman like environment that everyone benefited from.
Highlights of the year included the National Championships in Tullamore which saw a good attendance at all grades. In September the women’s heptathlon team travelled to Stoke to compete in the Home Countries International. This competition provided invaluable experience for the team as they competed against leading heptathletes from England, Scotland and Wales.
In October and November the national squad welcomed the Irish Schools Combined Events team and their coaches. Over the autumn sessions a lecture series was included to cover nutrition for combined events and goal setting in athletics. The addition of the schools team introduced a new dynamic as they prepared for their international in Scotland in December.
The year closed in December with an open juvenile `try combined events’ session in Kilkenny City Harriers similar to the one conducted in May in Templemore AC. These juvenile sessions are very popular with up to 60 athletes gathering for each event.
A good year for Combined Events in 2011 has had a positive impact on the national indoor CE championships with increased entries to competition at all levels and an increase in performance totals. This augers well for 2012 as the squad gathers at the end of February to start this year’s work.

Lifford AC Race Series
Lifford AC brought the curtain down on its inaugural 3 race series on Sunday past with the Lifford 5K in the town. The series which has attracted over 300 different runners during the past three weeks has proved an outstanding success since it started just a few short weeks ago. Indeed the club has succeeded in bringing road running into the heart of the local communities it serves, with large numbers of local runners turning out week on week. There was also a large turnout from clubs around the county and much further beyond. Sunday’s race was the biggest yet with 186 runners and walkers completing the 5K loop.
The rain poured from the night before and had not stopped by the time the race started early on Sunday. However, weather conditions rarely deter the brave, and this was evident not just by the numbers taking part, but with some outstanding performances and times. Councillor Gerry Crawford, a former athlete with Lifford AC got everyone under starters orders at 10am and set the large crowd off over the 5K distance. The race itself was won in a fine display of front running by City of Derry’s John Paul Wiiliamson in 15.50, followed by Finn Valley’s Darren McGlinchey in 15.57 and Tir Chonaill’s James Flanagan third in 16.00. The women’s race was won by Letterkenny AC’s Noreen McGettigan in 19.05 with City of Derry’s Catherine Lilburn hot on her heels in 19.07. Third woman home was Finn Valley’s Miriam Boner in 20.40.
The three race series saw athletes accumulate points across each race with over 1,000eur in prizes presented to category winners on Sunday. The senior men’s category winners were Foyle Valley’s Keith Sheils, Lifford AC’s Daniel Hannigan in second and Finn Valley’s Dean Toland third. The Senior Womens category was won by Catherine Lilburn from City of Derry, followed by Foyle Valley’s Gemma McGinty and Finn Valley’s Samantha Wilkinson in third. In the Masters men V1 category, Letterkenny’s Humphrey Murphy was victorious, with Gary McGee of City of Derry in second and Letterkenny’s Martin Gormley in third. In the Mens V2, Letterkenny’s Joe English topped the leader board, Enniskillens Jimmy Renfrew in second and City of Derry’s Peter Lilburn in third. In the Men’s V3 category, Christy McMonagle was victorious, second was Lifford’s Danny Burns, and third, Letterkenny’s Kevin Toner.
In the Masters women categories, it was a Lifford one, two and three in the V1 category, with Isabella Breslin securing maximum points, followed by Audrey Friel in second and Mariea McGinley in third. In the V2 category, Dympna Barrett had maximum points, followed by Ruth McCrudden in second and Karen Petersen in third. In the V3 category, Lifford’s Betty Burns was victorious, just ahead of Tir Chonaill’s Vera Haughey in second, and Lifford’s Joan Colhoun in third.
Finally, in the Junior Women’s category, City of Derry’s Amy McDaid won all three races to achieve maximum points, with Lifford AC sisters Shannon and Kathleen Craig in second and third respectively. In the Junior Men’s category, Lifford’s Ciaran Meehan emerged victorious, followed by City of Derry’s Zack McGowan in second and Finn Valley’s Orin McDermott in third.
Thanks to everyone who turned out to support Sunday’s race and who helped out in any way. Thanks also to everyone in Lifford, St. Johnston, Carrigans and Raphoe who made the race series the success it was. Finally, to all the athletes that travelled from far and near to support the series, the club extends its sincere gratitude.
St. Patrick’s 5K Festival Road Race
‘With a focus on health and fitness to the forefront of people’s minds in the lead-up to the London 2012 Olympics, we are hoping to see more families than ever before take part in this year’s Kleinwort Benson Investors St. Patrick’s 5k Festival Road Race’ – race director, Senator Eamonn Coghlan.
The race will take place in Dublin on Sunday, 18th March, beginning at 12.00 noon from the Mansion House on Dawson Street, where runners will follow a route through Georgian Dublin before returning again to the finish line at the Mansion House.
Part of the proceeds raised will go to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin with the balance going to fund facilities being provided for young athletes by the organising club Metropolitan Harriers & St. Brigid’s Athletic Club.
Now in its seventh year, the race is one of the highlights of the annual St. Patrick’s Festival programme and a major element in attracting tourists and visitors to Dublin city. The first of only three city street races being held in Dublin this year, it is open to families and fun runners as well as dedicated athletes. The event is organised with the support of Dublin City Council and An Garda Síochána who will close off streets along the route while the race is in progress.
Adding to the festive atmosphere will be an entertainment programme that features a live band, jugglers, clowns, face painters, balloon artists, stilt walkers, fire eaters and a parade of motorbikes, to name but a few.
Speaking at the launch, Eamonn Coghlan said that the need for the public in general, and for young people in particular, to take part in events such as this is now more acute than ever. ‘As a society, we must get out and take part in events of this kind if we are to avoid storing up health problems for the future. That is why our race has been structured to appeal to elite athletes, families and fun runners alike’ he said.
Referring to the race itself, Eamonn added ‘I am proud to be involved in an event that was established by my late father many years ago and which still brings such benefit to Dublin city. With a focus on health and fitness to the forefront of people’s minds in this the year of the London 2012 Olympics, we expect to see more families participate than ever’.
Winner last year, for the second time in succession, was Mullingar athlete Mark Christie who completed the course in a time of 14 min 17 sec, just 5 seconds adrift of the course record which he set the previous year. The women’s category was won by Down athlete, Kerry Harty of Newcastle AC in a time of 16 min 21 sec while team prizes went to Rathfarnham WSAF (men) and Sportsworld of Templeogue (women).
The organisers have retained the support of the same sponsorship team that has backed the event for the past number of years – Kleinwort Benson Investors, providers of investment strategies for pension funds, charities and corporate bodies.
Those intending to take part can register on-line at or by post to Mary Friel, Hon. Secretary, MSBAC, Unit 2, Coolport, Coolmine Business Park, Dublin 15. An entry fee of EUR20 applies to all entries received before March 16th. Late entries will also be taken up to 11.00hrs on Race Day for a fee of EUR25. A special rate of EUR30 applies to families of up to 4 registering on the day only (e.g. 2 adults & 2 children or 1 adult & 3 children up to 16yrs).

Exciting Weekend for Irish Athletes
It has been a hectic weekend for Irish athletes in competition in the US. David McCarthy won a stunning mile race at the Terrier Invitational setting a huge Personal Best of 3:55.75 minutes. McCarthy has shown a return to form in recent weeks and looks set for a strong indoor season in the US Collegiate NCAA championships.
After his Boston triumph McCarthy said in a Flotrack interview “I feel strong - I feel fast”.
“Its been so hard over the past couple of years because you have such a passion for the sport you get frustrated when you’re training so hard” he said speaking about the sickness and injuries he encountered over the past couple if years. “It’s the passion and love of the sport that keeps you in it” he said, “and for days like today it’s worth it”
His time is a new New England record as well as a stadium record. More surprisingly, considering the athletes who have competed for Providence College, it is a new school record, bettering Andy Keith’s 1994 best of 3:56.29.Fellow Providence team mate Shane Quinn (Ferrybank AC) smashed his PB for 3,000m with a time of 8:06.3.
John Coghlan was 3rd in the same race and also dipped under the 4 minute barrier with 3:59.32 minutes and in doing do his father Eamon and himself have become the first Irish father and son duo to break the magical 4 minute barrier. Coghlan will next compete in the Millrose Games as part of a strong DCU Medley Relay team that also includes Mark English and European U23 medallist Brian Gregan.
Irish Inter county cross country winner Sara Louise Treacy (Moynalvy AC) showed her liking for the track with a 2:11.14 effort in Cardiff for a new indoor 800m PB.
At the same meet Ruairi Finnegan (Letterkenny AC) smashed his indoor PB for 1,500m with a time of 3:48.65, just three hundredths of a second ahead of Joe Warne (Dohenys AC).

Reynolds Sets New U23 Irish Indoor 60 Hurdles Record
Ben Reynolds of North Down AC celebrated his official switch from Great Britain to Irish Athletics with a new Irish U23 Indoor Record over 60m hurdles in Lee Valley, London yesterday. His time of 7.88 takes 0.14 seconds off John Whelan’s record of 8.02 that dates back to 1994.
Reynolds is the reigning senior Irish outdoor champion and will be looking to take the indoor title when he competes in the Woodies DIY Senior Indoor championships in Belfast in two weeks’ time. Irish Senior record holder Peter Coghlan is making a big comeback and will be out to test Reynolds. Coghlan’s clubmate from Crusaders AC, Ian McDonald, has also shown early season form, setting a personal best of 7.93 last week and will be looking to retain the indoor title he won 12 months ago.
