Athenry AC at 'The Streets'

It was another absolutely beautiful evening in Galway city last Saturday as thousands of runners and walkers gathered for one of the road-racing highlights of the year. For many the process is familiar but no less enjoyable from one year to the next. Almost everything about this race is just right - it almost seems like fine weather is guaranteed after the experience of the last few years. It's not often that we runners get to take over the city streets and enjoy ourselves at full speed down the middle of the road.

Organising this road race is a huge logistical challenge for the Galway City Harriers club each year and one that they rise to with astounding energy, creativity and good will. It wasn't lost on any of the Athenry AC members that night, that they could only enjoy such a great evening's running because so much hard work had been done by the 'Harriers' club. We offer our thanks and congratulations on another fine race.

As is almost traditional at this stage there was a huge turnout from the club at the race and as far as I can make out we had about 60 finishers in total. I've tried to extract the Athenry AC participants out from the results posted on the GCH website - apologies if I've missed anyone out.

Special mention for Martin Keane who claimed the M65 division - fine running by 'Il Presidente'. That other old codger Mick Rice (yours truly) also won the M40's. There were personal best times for the distance scattered throughout the field with particularly good performances reported for valerie Glavin, Owen Curran and Adrian Fitzmaurice - I'm sure there were more.

After the running was done around 30 of us retired to the Bella Roma for a bite to eat and the trash-talk continued late into the night.
