It's been on the road since 1986 and few would deny that the Corrib Oil Streets of Galway 8k is the star attraction of the Connacht road races in Summer. What a buzz to line up with over two thousand eager runners in the Claddagh at the start. What a jolt to make that final left turn onto the Salthill prom and feel the relief of knowing you are on the finishing straight...and then remember that this particular finishing straight goes on quite a bit longer.
But despite the attractions of the Olmpics and a concurrent Connemara 100 Mile race, our club had 58 participants in the 2012 Streets, down a little on the 60+ of recent years but a fine turnout nevertheless. We were rewarded with a "silver" in the Women's Team race behind Galway City Harriers and several fine individual performances including a raft of PBs I'm guessing.
Congratulations to the those scoring on the women's team Sinéad Foran (33:01), Sinéad Brody (33:38), and Miriam Wall (35:50), with Maeve Noone next of our gals on 37:44. Ray Somers (pictured, photo by John O'Connor) was first home of our club members with a PB of 28:31. Ray actually beat that 8k time during a 10k race the previous week so we look forward to seeing him break it again during the next couple of months. Paul Giblin and Gearoid Rohan also had impressive times with a host of Fit4Lifers making great debuts at this race: yes, those extra 3 kilometers are a killer, we've been there.
