The third annual Boston Scientific 5k race took place on Wednesday evening in (almost) glorious sunshine. Runners were blessed with a lovely evening in a week of downpours.

The race is one of many events being organised by Boston Scientific employees to raise funds for children's facilities at the COPE Galway Waterside House Women's Refuge.

232 gallant runners crossed the line with smiles (or grimaces) on their faces, led in by Boston Scientific's own Gerry Ryan for the men, and Claire Morrissey for the ladies.

The race organisers would like to thank everybody who helped make the night a success - the Maree Community centre, members of Athenry AC, the Red Cross, the Gardai, all our volunteers and especially the runners, walkers and crawlers.

I enjoyed the race, but was disappointed that there wasn't enough water. We came in close to the end and by the time we got there, there was no water left for us. I really feel this could have been better.

Yes, we did run out of water close to the end and we apologise for that.  We will make sure that we buy more next year.   It's always difficult to know how much to provide, but we'll certainly increase it next year.

Following some feedback and a review of the race video, it appears that we missed one runner as he crossed the line (three people crossed together) and this had the effect that many people had a few seconds added to their reported times.  The corrected results sheet is now attached.

This has nothing to do with this race, but just seen the price for the coole park 5k,are they for real €25,i have no problem giving money to any charity, but most races dont go over 20euro,bigger and better races would not even come close to 25euros,was going to do this race, but not any more, why do people organising races thinking they can charge what they like,i hope they have a good turn out,but people should really stop paying for these over priced races.

Hi there

I would just like to relate to the above comment. The price of €25 for a 5k race is scandalous, even if it is for a charity. How can people actually justify charging runners these high amounts? especially when 5 k is such a short distance.

I hope runners out there see sense and don’t attend these races, which from my experience are usually shabby and badly organised. The best races for quality and atmosphere are no doubt the races organised by local clubs.

I agree with the above comment, €25 for a 5k race is ridiculous. I did the Scarriff 10k yesterday in aid of the local hospital and it only cost €10 to enter and we got a very well organised event, with great after race refreshments. Over 400 people were registered and although they didn't all turn up, they still made a nice sum for the charity. As long as people continue to pay these high prices, the organisers will carry on charging these entry fees.

Hi All, in response to the comments on this noticeboard and feedback from participants we have taken the decision to reduce the entry fee for the Coole Runnings event to the original fee of €18. All those who paid the highher fee of €25 since Spetember 1st will receive a refund of €7.
All new entrants will pay €18. The fee covers a return shuttle bus from the Lady Gregory Hotel to Coole Park, refreshments after the race at the Lady Gregory and all particiapnts will receive a T Shirt.
Particiapnts can register online at runireland.com or on the day of the race at the Lady Gregory Hotel.
We are looking forward to a great race.
All proceeds from the race will towards supporting our work with the most isolated in Galway.

The goose that laid the golden egg will soon die - unfortunately. No one can be held to ransom to enter a 5k. road race. Where are the account sheets? How much money is actually being made? Where is it all going?

We do know where the money goes for a charity race but where is the money going for private races? A paltry 1% to a local charity is an insult. Is somebody getting rich on pounding feet?

While I agree that there are indeed more & more races out there that are overpriced and badly organised, I think it is going a bot overboard to say that 'we are been held to ransom'. Nobody is been forced to run in any of these races. The best way you can protest them surely is to just not enter them? There are overpriced shops, restaurants etc out there, they have the right to charge what they want, the same way that the public have the choice to frequent these establishments or not. Are you going to go into these places and ask them to see their account sheets? There are a number of very good races that are organised by clubs and normally are run to high standards. The funds from these events are obviously going to the running of the club. What is happening now is that lots of other groups, organisations or private individuals are waking up to the current boom in running and trying to jump on the gravy train, a lot of times to the detriment of the sport. Then you have certain groups trying to 'work' the charitable angle. Eventually, like all booms, things will level off and the cream willl rice to the top. In the meantime, nobody is going to get rich on pounding feet if there are no feet doing the pounding.

There has been some discussion above on the value for money of various races.  While I understand that these comments were not focused on the Boston Scientific 5k, they were attached to the story I posted regarding that race.

The Boston Scientific 5k organising team agreed that in order to be completely open and transparent it is appropriate for us to publish our accounts here.  I am therefore attaching our full accounts...
