A major 5k run and walk will be held in Claremorris on Sunday September 26th, starting at 11 am. It is being organised by local woman Janet Hinchion who works with the Kitui Development Centre in Kenya, a charitable non profit organisation. The purpose of the race is to help to raise funds to build a refuge centre for vulnerable children in Kenya. At the moment the organisation is working on securing a suitable site and money raised through this event will go towards the purchase of this.

Janet Hinchion came home in early September to co-ordinate the event. She will have the support of both local clubs - Claremorris AC will be providing their excellent facilities at the track (which will act as Race Headquarters) while Mayo AC will be helping to promote and organise the event.

It is really an event that is open to all who want to walk run or jog it also gives people an opportunity to contribute towards a cause that helps those less well-off in our World.

As already stated, Race HQ is at the Claremorris AC track where entries will be taken from 10 am. The 5 kilometre course will be the same as that used earlier in the year for the Fit4Life 5k series race. It will start on the Kiltimagh road just past CBE headquarters, turn right on to “Fahys Road”, turn right again on to the old Knock road, passing St Colmans College, turning right again passing through Claremount and finishing with a lap of the track!

While it is expected that the event will attract many of the local leading runners, the organisers point out that this is an event for all who want to ”run, jog, walk, push the pram or have a family walk”

* Entry fee is €10 for adults €5 for students and €20 per family

* Prizes for top 3 men and women finishers

* Refreshments available afterwards.
