A crowd of about 100 turned out to take part in the 2nd Clifden Lifeboat 10k race on Sunday 13th September 2009.

Entries came from all over Galway, as well as Mayo, Cork, Kildare, Dublin & Tyrone with two even turning up from the USA.

The weather was very different from last year, with clear blue skies. This made for a challenging course, harder as the temperatures were up into the 20s by race start at 2pm.

However, this did not put off Eoin Mullan from Tyrone (37.10) and Keith Whyte (37.36) who not only came in 1st and 2nd but also beat last year's best time of 38.51 mins. Annette Keane was the 1st woman (48.33).

The race is organised to raise funds for the Clifden lifeboat and is held close to the anniversary of a tragic event, when the MVF St. Oliver sank in bad weather on the 17th September 2004, claiming the lives of four local fishermen, including Mikey Mullen, who was only 18 years old, and had only been at sea for 6 months at the time. It is organised by Mikey's mother, Laurance, as a tribute to him and in memory of all other local fishermen who have died at sea over the years.

Many thanks to all who took part, those who came out on the day to support them, and everyone who helped out or sponsored it in any way.
