Following a Spanish winner last year, this year’s Conamara 10k had a more local flavour, with Athenry man, Richard Meaney coming home first in 38:19. First woman home was Barbara Bergin from Indreabhán, who was also the first F50 home, in a time of 46:30.

Indeed, it was a good day for vets, with a very strong performance by Martin McEvilly in the over 60 age bracket, who finished second overall in 38:35 after being neck and neck with the eventual winner up until the 9.5km mark.

The Conamara 10k, which is one of the most scenic road races on the Irish calendar, saw athletes leaving Carna village in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltachta and heading out over two islands before turning back for home on Mweenish island.

There were age category prizes for the over 40s, 50s and 60s, along with prizes for the first male and female local finishers, and cash and trophies for the overall winners. Along with being a chip-timed race, all finishers received a Conamara 10k t-shirt and were well taken care of after the race with soup, sandwiches, tea and coffee provided by the Carna Bay Hotel.

The race will be held again next year on October 11.
