Galway’s latest European medallist will be the guest race starter at this year’s Conamara 10k.

Marie Boyle, who won a silver medal at the recent European Duathlon Championships in Austria, will start a race that has seen runners of the calibre of Catherina McKiernan take the win in recent years.

The Conamara 10k, arguably the most scenic road race in Ireland, will start in the Gaeltacht village of Carna before crossing onto Muighnis island and returning to the mainland for the finish.

“The Conamara 10k is that unique combination of a competitive, fast and yet breathtakingly scenic road race,” said An Spidéal's Marie Boyle, “and I’m honoured to be guest starter.”

Previous guest starters have included world silver medal cross-country runner, Catherina McKiernan, and Irish Ironman record holder, Joyce Wolfe.

The occasion will also feature a variety of childrens' running events preceding the 10k run itself. Saturday night will see traditional music and song in Carna Bay Hotel, following the prize-giving.

The Conamara 10k, which is certified by Athletics Ireland, will be open to runners, joggers and walkers and is being organised by Connemara-based triathlon club, TríSpórt. The race will be chip-timed and refreshments will be available afterwards in Carna Bay Hotel.

“The great thing about the Conamara 10k is that the hospitality and the scenery has resulted in many of the same runners returning year after year from all over the country,” said race director Rónán Mac Con Iomaire. “This year, we have the added privilege of having a member of our own club starting the race as a European medallist.”

The Conamara 10k, which has been accurately measured using a Jones Counter and is AAI permitted, will see cash prizes for the senior runners, and prizes also for various veteran categories. The race is open to runners, walkers and joggers. 10k Chonamara can be entered at activeglobal.ie and further information is available at trisport.ie.
