Next weekend Ray O'Connor will attempt to complete his 100th race of at least the standard marathon distance - an achievement that only a handful of Irish people have managed before. Known to one and all in the club as the founder and race director of the Connemara Marathon, Ray has been an active member of Athenry AC since the very early days and will bring the good wishes of all our members with him to the starting line next weekend.
Ray's '100th' is scheduled to take place in Pisa next Sunday and will be the culmination of a journey that began in November 2000 in New York - a race that took him 5:15 to complete. A lot has changed since those days and his personal best time for the marathon distance has tumbled over the years. In amongst the marathons, Ray has completed a number of ultramarathons including the famous Marathon Des Sables and of course the Connemara 100 Mile road race.
Although next Sunday's race will mark the end of one chapter in Ray's running story, I'm sure the following chapters will be equally as interesting, inspiring and adventurous.
Good Luck Ray!Category:
