Sports Psychology - GTC Lecture Series

Karen Weekes, a sports psychologist who specialises in working with ultra-endurance athletes, will give an outline of sports psychology and its relation to sports performance and specifically to triathlons, including how to cognitively overcome pain, fatigue and boredom with some practical suggestions and also how to maintain motivation for training and competition.

Ever Fancied a Kayathalon ?

GOAL Kayathalon is a novel fundraising event in aid of GOAL’S Famine appeal. It is a triathlon consisting of a hike, a cycle and a paddle and will be held in Gleann an Mháma, Conamara on April 25 2009. The route is attached below. In this increasing time of financial difficulty for many, charities are struggling to provide funding for projects in the developing world and the Irish Government has recently pulled 95million from Irish Aid. In this world of ever- growing global interdependence, it is the poorest of the poor in the developing world who suffer
most.

A Sunday 'Stroll' Up and Down the Highways and Byways of Maree

JAL 'finished' in Maree

I'd heard a lot about the first running of the Elverys-sponsored Maree 8KM Charity Road Race last year from Ann Carter & Mark and Grainne Breen. I made it my business to be there for the second running, yesterday, Sunday 15 February 2009 @ 1:00 PM.

IAAF Profile of Olive Loughnane

It was great to see Loughrea AC's Olive Loughnane profiled on the IAAF site recently. If you want to catch up with what Olive has achieved in her career so far and indeed what she plans for 2009 and beyond this is a good place to start.

Connemara Raiding Party

Athenry AC's annual pre-Connemara Marathon raiding party took to the roads of Connemara this weekend to test out the famous marathon route before the big day next month. A full compliment of 27 dedicated Connemara Marathon aspirants wrapped up well and braved the cold weather and were rewarded with a stunning day in the mountains. A touch of showbiz glamour was added by the participation of "Run Johnny Run", former Sawdoctor's drummer and current marathon fundraiser, Johnny Donnelly.

Close Competition for Hession in Belfast

Athenry AC speedster Paul Hession continued his preparations for the Europen Indoor Championships with some solid sprinting at the Odyessy Arena in Belfast at the Irish National Indoor Championships. Paul was just pipped at the post by American Josh Norman in the final of the 60m sprints but Paul must surely be satisfied with his form at a distance well below his specialisation.

A 10 minute video produced by Martin O'Driscoll for the 2008 road race...

The quality of the production speaks for itself than I ever could!

In Search of Veterans...

Message just received from Martin Keane:

The website for the 2009 European Veterans road racing weekend (Friday 29 May to Sunday 31 May) is http://www.aarhus1900.dk/evacns2009/ .

Michael Fennell - (087) 1351134 - expects at least 30 to travel from Ireland and would love to hear from any others thinking about it...

Early booking of flights and accommodation is strongly advised!

I've also been told that some youngsters' band called The Eagles are playing that weekend in the same area.

Solid Early Season Sprinting From Paul Hession

Paul Hession got his indoor season off to a bright start in Moscow and Malmo this week. The Athenry AC ace sprinter opened his season at the 'Russian Winter' IAAF Permit meeting in Moscow at the CSKA Stadium last Sunday the 1st of February. Paul made the final of the 60m sprint but finished 6th in that final in a time of 6:75 which exactly equalled the qualification time for the forthcoming European Indoor Championships.

2008 Athenry AC _Round The Tables_ Championship Final

The Final - Delmer vs Breen

The much-awaited final took place recently at the Athenry AC (Senior) Christmas party.

Peter Delmer versus Mark Breen!

Peter retained his title against first-time challenger Mark.

Peter's experience of the big occasion shone through as this YouTube video amply displays.

After a prolonged stewarts inquiry at the bar afterwards, Peter's victory was allowed to stand but only after Peter had bought the stewarts copious amounts of Club Orange and sometimes stronger.
