Nenagh Track

Athenry AC opened its 2007 season with a very successful day in Nenagh at the Galway AAI Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, 6th January. The club earned a substantial 19 gold, 10 silver and 8 bronze medals across the juvenile and senior categories.

The most successful categories for Athenry were the U13 Girls where, ably assisted by the legacy of some of Galway Hurlings finest, we won 5 of the 8 gold medals on offer. Our U17 Boys won 5 of the 7 gold medals claimed on the day.

Most notable performances on the day came from Maria Cooney who had double success in the U13 60m hurdles and Long Jump, Katelyn Duane who doubled in the U17 Girls 60m and 200m, Gary Sweeney who doubled in the U17 Boys 60m and Long Jump, schools international athlete Claire Rockall who had double success in the Senior Ladies 800m and High Jump and Claire McNamara who won the Senior Ladies 60m hurdles and High Jump.

Other notable performance came from Marie Touhy in the U13 girls 600m who actually posted a faster winning time than the equivalent boys event, Emma Grady who won the U12 girls Shot Put, Orlaith McGrath who won the U13 Girls 60m, Hannah Kindregan who won the U14 Girls Shot Putt, schools international Conor Caulfield, Kevin Madden and Conor Kindregan who won the U17 Boys 200m, High Jump and Shot Put respectively, and relative newcomer Paul McNamara who won the Senior Men 3000m.

Relay wins for Athenry came in the U13 Girls and U17 Boys. Congratulations to all Athenry AC athletes who performed admirably on the day. Special mention must go to Kevin Reilly who had to go straight to hospital after coming to a dramatic sudden halt while running the anchor leg of the Senior Mens relay. We hope his injury is not too serious and we wish him a speedy recovery.
