Independence Day 5KM - Salthill

Date:
Saturday, 4 July 2009 - 6:00pm - 7:00pm

The First Annual 'Independence Day at the Bay 5K' presented by Irish Running Tours has something that appeals to everyone. This July 4th race includes a 5K road race along the beautiful Atlantic coastline in historic Salthill, Galway, and a 1K kid's fun run/walk. Both options offer adults and children of all abilities the opportunity to experience summer in the west of Ireland at its absolute finest.

"This is a family event, and a fun event. We hope to folks out there from 8 to 80 running and walking together," says Race Director, Paul Fallon. "We want them to have fun before, during and after the race."

This AAI sanctioned race course is the perfect distance of 5K (that's ONLY 3.1 miles for you newbie's); it's flat, fast & scenic and starts at 6pm. Even if you don't train much you will still be a winner--the slow pace will give you more time to enjoy the views! However, keep in mind the faster you run, the more time you'll have to celebrate your victory at the post race festivities. And since the race is on a Saturday, that means you have the opportunity to make a weekend out of it and to enjoy Salthill and all its restaurants and shopping opportunities along the scenic shore.

The race "headquarters" will be the Galway Bay Hotel, ideally located beside Leisureland on the prom. The race starts from Leisureland and will finish beside the Aquarium, and consists mainly of views of Galway Bay and the Clare Mountains--what more could you want? The kid's event will have much of the same scenery and will take place along the prom. The Galway Bay coastline, the beautiful homes and the neighbours cheering on the runners should provide plenty of emotional fuel to ensure that all participants have a great race. We are planning on getting as many people as possible lining the prom and cheering on the participants.

Salthill is the type of town that is sought by artists for its spectacular views; however, the true beauty of this race is that it's also a valuable fundraiser for the Irish Heart Foundation. The race is being organized by Irish Running Tours Ltd. Since its inception in 2007 by Paul Fallon, this local company has bringing runners & walkers over to Ireland from across the globe, with Galway a very attractive destination. They also organize City Running Tours in Galway & Dublin.

The race has the backing and support of Failte Salthill and the recently formed Americans in Galway Organization. As this is the first year organizers are still actively seeking sponsors to help make the race reach its potential and to raise much needed funds for the Irish Heart Foundation. The event will be promoted locally, nationally and internationally.

There will be awards for the first 3 female and male overall, and the top male, female finishers in each 5-year age group. There will also be club team prizes, corporate team prizes and prizes for the best American themed costume. And of course there will be special prizes for participants in the 'Fit For Life' category.

Wait, there's even more from this first-year race--the race that keeps on giving--there will be post race massages available courtesy of a local company, Sportspoint Massage. After your massage and terrific post race food you can bask in the glory of a great run by enjoying the after-race music and party at the Galway Bay Hotel. All of this is sure to bring a smile to everyone's face, so be sure to flash those pearly whites to the camera as Finish Line Photographs will photograph each runner as they cross the finish line. Photos will be available for purchase on-line soon after the race. 10% of the cost of the photo's will to the Irish Heart Foundation.

In its first year race organizers estimate the field size will be approximately 1000. However, once word gets out about the gorgeous course and great amenities, this first Annual Independence day at the Bay 5K will most likely exceed that number by many, many more. It's going to be a fun, family atmosphere; and fun is the operative word. We are also hoping to have a number of celebrities down for the day.

So join us on Saturday July 4th for a day of healthy activity, family fun and fabulous views, and help our American friends celebrate their national holiday.
