A Club Tradition….Week-In, Week-Out

Athenry TownAthenry Town

Since the senior section of the club was re-established in 2002 there has been one activity that has remained constant each week and that is the Saturday morning training run. Going into our fifth year since that re-organisation at least one club member, and usually a lively group, has turned up every single week at the church car park in Athenry at 9:00am to train.

Some weekends there are only a couple of loyal supporters of this session and on others we have a crowd of enthusiastic souls ready to get their Saturday off to a great start, but there’s always, always someone there. With such a busy schedule of races over the summer months, many of which take place on Saturdays, it’s not surprising that many people don’t make the Saturday training session every week, but we should all try to visit this session at least once in a while.

Joining Athenry AC

Athenry AC is always on the lookout for fresh blood and welcome new members at any time.

There are many reasons why somebody would like to join Athenry AC!
First of all, let it be pointed out that Athenry is not dedicated solely to elite athletes.
We focus on participation and fun, not on breaking world records all the time!
The best thing is to come down any Saturday morning and see how much fun it is.

A Night of Celebration

Athenry AC Mens Senior Marathon Team
At the back: Martin Keane, Peter Delmer, TJ Beatty (Loughrea AC), Paul McNamara and Ray O'Connor.
In front: Owen Curran, Michael Rooney, Alan Burke and Mick Rice.

Last night saw an informal gathering of Athenry AC members to celebrate club achievements during 2006. We had a very good turnout in festive surroundings in Keane’s Bar & Restaurant. The atmosphere may have been low-key and informal but there was a palpable sense of pride in what a small and young club had accomplished in such a short time.

Athenry Road Map with Distances Included

Attached is a map of Athenry with distances marked out. I've inserted the distance between all junctions so that you can use it to work out the length of a route before or after a run. I use it all the time and I know that many others have a copy for some time now. If you find it useful, print it out and laminate it.

All distances are in miles. All distances were worked out by scanning an ordnance survey map and using a piece of software called Accuroute to measure the distances. I find it's pretty accurate, but if you use it enough you're sure to find a few mistakes.
