Athenry Athletic Club had an immensely successful outing at the Athletics Ireland West Region Track & Field Championships for u13’s to u19’s in Sligo this past Saturday. The club brought home no fewer than nine Connacht titles, ten silver medals and nine bronze medals, possibly a record haul at a Connacht Championship.

Claire Rockall was most impressive taking gold in the u18 girls 400m hurdles, 800m and 1500m while Katelyn Duane took gold in the u16 girls 100m and 200m. Aoife Touhy captured gold in the u17 girls 1500m in a new pb of 5:13. Conor Kindregan claimed gold in the u16 boys discus while Aidan Conway did likewise in the the u17 boys discus, along with a silver in the shot putt. The boys u16 relay team, reigning all-Ireland indoor champions, claimed gold in the 4x100m.

Sinead Touhy took silver in the u15 girls 80m hurdles while her younger sister Marie took silver in the u13 girls 600m, an event where Athenry also claimed the bronze with a fine run from Hayleigh Somers. Conor Caulfield claimed silver in the u16 boys 100m, 200m and long jump while Cathal Kelly claimed the bronze in both 100m and 200m. Hannah Kindregan claimed silver in the u14 boys shot putt while Sorcha Murphy and Sinead Touhy claimed silver and bronze in the u15 girls high jump. Sorcha Murphy also claimed silver in the u15 girls discus. Simon Brody claimed silver in the u13 boys high jump.

New member Darragh Whyte had a great day out claiming bronze in both u14 boys 200m and 800m while Teresa Garvey claimed bronze in the girls u15 1500m. Marie Touhy claimed bronze in the u13 girls Javelin. The u16 girls relay team also claimed bronze in that event.

Strong performances came from Serena Hansberry, Ciara Fox, Shane Conway, Kevin Madden, Yvonne Keary and Helen Geraghty who all just missed out on the medals with 4th place finishes. Cian Kelly, Conor Kindregan, Patrick Hannon, Brian Kelly and Brendan Brennan also impressed.
