Saturday, 8 Setpember, dawned bright and very warm in South Galway for the second annual Kilcolgan Castle 4M road race sponsored by South Galway AC.

Over 110 toed the line around the very scenic four mile pan-handled course.  First home was local athlete, Peadar Harvey of the neighbouring club, Cruaghwell.  He was followed closely by former Athenry stalwart but now unattched, Conor Dolan. Peadar's equally young teammate, Neil Greaney was third.  Our own Mick Rice, less than a month after his latest epic 100 mile sojourn around Connemara, was 4th.

In the women's race, Michelle Lynch of GCH was too strong for allcomers, while there was quite a battle for 2nd, 3rd and 4th places, with Caroline Whiriskey (Clancy) of Loughrea squeezing out Mary Kealy of Craughwell and Aileen McNamara of West Porttri (ex-Athenry) another second behind that!

Sean Dooner (M80) graced the race with his presence and got around the course in sub-48 and picked up the M70 prize in the process.

Refreshments were served afterwards in Kilcolgan Castle, including oysters locally sourced.

Congrats to the South Galway club, and in particular Frank Power, on a well organised event which run off with the minimum of fuss.  Well done!
