In this age when everyone is running to try and beat their times at various distances (especially during the Galway 5km series) it was a refreshing change when we found out that the timing machine was not able to provide runners times during the event!
Last Sunday saw the first run based around the Kilcornan Centre near Clarenbridge and the runners were greeted with great weather. With most of the route being held within the grounds of Kilcornan and the local Coillte forest it made somewhat of a different run to what most people will have experienced before. The route was certified by AAI with only 700 meters being on the main road. The forest tracks were all dry, wide, flat and what most runners described as being very relaxing. Even the tarmac roads were free from traffic which made it a very safe race to run in. When it was explained that we had no timings no one complained but the feedback was how nice the race was, what with the parking, hot showers and O’Brien’s sandwiches to finish off with.
To start the day off, 46 juveniles with ages ranging from 4 years to 15 set off on a closed 1km route around the walled gardens, through a small forest and down the main avenue to finish under the arch. First home was 11 year old Christopher Mooney in a time of 4 mins. 10 secs. He was closely followed by Finn Conerney & Caimin Muldoon. The first girl home was Niamh Conerney. (All Predator tri club.)
The senior event was won very impressively by Tim Bradley of Big River Running Club, followed by Ian Egan of GCH and Johnny Lane of Craughwell. First lady home was Fionnula Keane of Loughrea with GCH’s Nicola O’Ceallgh & Caoinhe Daniels.
Predator triathlon club would like to thank everyone who turned up to run in the event, especially all the juveniles, their parents and all volunteers. We look forward to putting on the event again for the running community and hope that the race will become a favourite on the Connaught running calendar.
If anyone has views on how we could improve the race please let us know.

thanks.

Great Race
Gerry Carty, GCH here.
Firstly I’d like to thank ye for putting on a great race over a beautiful course. Definitely one of the most enjoyable races I’ve run around Galway. (in hindsight of course, at the time of running it seemed more painful than enjoyable). Hopefully ye run it again as all I’ve hear is since is people saying they hope to see it on the calendar again.
Just in terms of results.
I clocked myself at 30:16, just ahead of Dave Huane of Mayo AC. (I’d guess he was in at 30:17).
Galway vs Mayo !
Good man Gerry, don't let that Mayo man away with anything :-)
