A good day in the Beagh/Shanaglish area yesterday with the third running of their 10K road race, now renamed the Martin Egan Memorial 10K Road Race.  Margaret Walsh - organising her second race in a little under a month - and her band of helpers from the local area and her home club, South Galway, put on a fine show for visitors and locals alike.

Over 100 toed the line around a pan-handled course.  Michael Shannon (Kilnaboy) and Michelle Lynch (GCH) were the two senior winners, who were presented their trophies by Brian Bell, who ran with Martin Egan in his Irish four mile record-breaking run in Dundalk in 1946.

Other friends of Martin from the old days were also on hand to help with the prize-giving, include Stephen Killeen.  The free 32 page A4 booklet specially produced by Margaret went down a treat too.  It commemorated Martin's and his siblings' athletic achievements in the late-30s, 40s and early-50s.  Both Brian and Stephen contributed final articles to the publication.

Declan - Martin's only nephew - and his wife Fiona were deeply involved in the race organisation and Declan's only sister and their mother were also on hand to cheer on the racers and also to view an excellent set of original photos and newspaper articles of Martin's achievements.

Declan's father, John (better known as Jack), was a fine athlete in his own right, winning multiple Irish titles.  Their brother Michael won two Irish marathon championships in the mid-40s, with their sister Angela winning a national 1 mile cycle championship for good measure in the same year that her three siblings won national titles: 1945.
