The AAI/Woodie’s DIY Masters Track & Field Championships took place last Saturday and Loughrea AC’s Mary Barrett had a fantastic day of competition, claiming gold medals in no fewer than four competitions and silver in yet another. In the javelin competition Mary threw 22.79m for first place in her category (V3). She followed this up with another gold-medal performance in the women’s shot put, throwing 9.02m in the third round for 1st place. In the discuss competition her fourth round 23.63m was good enough for first place and she went on to claim the high jump title with a fifth round leap of 1.30m. We’re not altogether sure what went wrong in the long jump but Mary’s fourth round jump of 3.73m was only good enough for silver in that competition. We’re sure she wasn’t too disappointed. Congratulations Mary, that’s some day’s work!

There were other Galway athletes in action as well on the day with GCH’s Martin McEvilly taking silver in the V5 5,000m with a 18:24 run and Martin also claimed bronze in the 1,500m with 5:08:67 timing. Martin’s club mate Francis Ward competed in the 800m and the 1,500m while Mary’s club mate Pat Hannon competed in the 800m and 1,500m as well.
