Athenry Juvenile AC athletes had a great day out recently at the wonderful new indoor athletics arena at Athlone IT where Athenry athletes competed with the very best juvenile athletes in Connacht and came home with a very impressive total of 18 medals – 4 gold, 9 silver and 5 bronze. In addition we had very strong performances from several other Athenry athletes who were very close to winning medals if it were not for the very high number of entrants on the day- all there to perform at a venue worthy of a top class European event.
It must be a great feeling to see a young athlete you've coached over many years make a breakthrough at national level. Dermot McNamara of Athenry AC has seen a few and his latest is Sinéad Tuohy who recently won a silver medal in the All-Ireland Under 23 High Jump competition, held in the new indoor stadium in Athlone.
Congratulations to Athenry Juvenile athletes who were selected to run for their county today in the beautiful surroundings of Charleville Estate, Tullamore in the national cross country relay championship on today Sunday (24 February 2013). On the Galway Girls U12 team, we had Sarah Gilhooley, Danielle Collins and Freya Bohan, who all ran really well against some very tough opposition. Well done girls you did great at a national event!
Connacht Indoors are to be held in the brilliant new indoor venue at Athlone IT on Sunday 3rd March. We may be able to organise a training session at the venue possibly next week. Sinead will send a text around if it is going to happen.
The venue is fast making a reputation as a very fast track with lots of PB's and national records since it opened recently so here is looking forward to a great championship!
