The third annual Boston Scientific 5k race took place on Wednesday evening in (almost) glorious sunshine. Runners were blessed with a lovely evening in a week of downpours.

The race is one of many events being organised by Boston Scientific employees to raise funds for children's facilities at the COPE Galway Waterside House Women's Refuge.

232 gallant runners crossed the line with smiles (or grimaces) on their faces, led in by Boston Scientific's own Gerry Ryan for the men, and Claire Morrissey for the ladies.

Thanks to Michael McGrath for a copy of the results from last Saturday evening's race.  I had hopes of travelling but got a late call-up to go off reffing instead.  I was looking forward to meeting a namesake of myself from the Ballyhaunis area at the event.  Another time, sorry!

Results courtesy of Brendan Monaghan (Tuam AC).  It is a lovely idea and one that could be copied by almost any other village or town in the county: who is the fastest local miler!

The race was run as part of the recent Tuam Arts Festival.

OVER 300 RUNNERS JOGGERS AND WALKERS TOOK PART IN THE 18TH WESTARO MINI MARATHON 10K IN BALLA ON SATURDAY EVENING LAST (24 July 2010).

THE MAIN PRIZE WINNERS WERE AS FOLLOWS:

A total of 49 Athenry AC and guest athletes lined up at St. Mary's on Friday night last (23 July) for the 5th annual Athenry AC Handicap 10KM AKA Burger Run.  The course was slightly modified at very late notice to avoid traversing the railway level crossing near the town but it did not result in any disruption as the event took place with clockwork efficiency, ably RD'ed by James Corbett, with Maire Treasa Beatty and a gaggle of other helpers in close attendance.  Derek Conerney and his crew were cooking up a storm in the background!

A small yet strong field showed up for the 2010 running of the  Galway Track and field  10000m race last night in Dangan ,
 
The race was won by Matt Bidwell of GCH  in a time of 32.45, just ahead of Paul Mcnamara, Athenry AC,  who is just returning to action following his recent Cork marathon.

Well the weather didn't ddin't detract from some of the hardier runners in Galway as the took to the track in search of an exclusive PB.

This reporter doesn't know of many track miles held in the country this year, so well done those that took the opportunity when it arose.

A VERY COMPETITIVE RACE, IT WAS RACE NO 2 IN THE MAYOAC LEAGUE.  NEXT UP WILL BE THE WESTARO MINI-MARATHON [ALSO KNOWN AS THE BALLA 10K] ON SATURDAY EVENING JULY 24TH.  MORE DETAILS WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN THE COMING DAYS.

Brilliant day, brilliant event.  Take a bow Tony Killarney and crew on a well organised race and another worthy addition to the road racing calendar of the county.  The weather did its best to intrude but without success.  Over 100 enjoyed the scenic course and if there is a most verdant finishing 300 metres to a race anywhere in Ireland, please let me know.

A fantastic day out for this unique race!

Michael Walsh of Craughwell AC picked up the first prize, being only two seconds out.  He proceeded to donate the entire prize back to the organisers. 

James Lundon's tactic of waiting for an extra few seconds at the finish line paid off as he picked up a minor placing!

Five down and just one more to go - Loughrea hosted the 5th of this year's Galway 5km series under clear blue evening skies last evening. There was another very strong turnout with almost 500 people taking part on the night. As one would expect from a club with such a long and illustrious tradition in the art of road race organisation, everything went like clockwork.
