Maroon Army to Launch Secret Attack on Connemara

An army of 38 Athenry AC athletes have been conscripted to join the ranks in the Connemarathon next Sunday. Athenry AC has been affiliated with this fantastic event since it’s inception but never before have we sent forth such an impressive rush of adrenaline.

Thirty three will line up in Leenan for one of the best half-marathon’s in the country starting with a rush up the Devil’s Mother and finishing with an attack on the Hell of the West.

Three brave heroes are set to attack from the full-marathon flank and will march on meagre rations of carbo gels starting from Lough Inagh.

Run Inishbofin Island For Croi

Places for the hugely popular 3rd Annual Inishbofin Island Half Marathon in aid of local heart charity Croí are once again almost sold out!

This unique half-marathon challenge is open to walkers and runners and is being offered as a weekend package on the weekend of May 16th - 18th. The idyllic setting of Inishbofin is the backdrop to what has now become a hugely popular event. The 13.1mile run appeals to runners or walkers of all levels, who are guaranteed an unforgettable weekend.

Rumours have been perculating through to Athenry AC Central for the past few months that one of our top 10k'ers Brian O'Connor was "...training like a trojan..." . Other words like "madman" and "lunatic" were bandied about as well. We were told that he was preparing well for the National 10k in Athenry in April and was focused on running a good race there.

Athenry Juvenile Athletic Club - March 2008

A belated brief summary of the Connacht Juvenile indoor championships, I do not have times or distances for each individual performance at the moment.

A total of 42 athletes from Athenry Athletic club recently competed in the Connacht Indoor finals in Nenagh. We also had a number a athletes who were unable to compete due to illness and injury, Katlyn and Thomas Duane, Kevin Madden and Aoife Tuohy would all have been medal contenders.

Everyone watches them out of the corner of their eye. The hotel restaurant is warm yet their unsmiling heads peep out of black puffa jackets as they spill over the sides of the chairs swinging sinewy legs. Retina scorching yellow and pink runners are the only clue to their occupation although the hovering Spanish minder helps. One mechanically delivers slice after slice of unbuttered white bread into his mouth. February 19th is marathon time in Valencia and the Kenyans are in town.
