2008 Athenry AC _Round The Tables_ Championship Final

The Final - Delmer vs Breen

The much-awaited final took place recently at the Athenry AC (Senior) Christmas party.

Peter Delmer versus Mark Breen!

Peter retained his title against first-time challenger Mark.

Peter's experience of the big occasion shone through as this YouTube video amply displays.

After a prolonged stewarts inquiry at the bar afterwards, Peter's victory was allowed to stand but only after Peter had bought the stewarts copious amounts of Club Orange and sometimes stronger.

Details of Croi Running Trips Announced

For many years Athenry AC members have taken part in Croi fund raising trips all over the world. Ray O'Connor and his brother Johnny have led the way and the path they have blazed has been followed by Club Person of the year 2008 Maire T. Beatty, Larry Kelly, Mick Rice, Jane Ann Healy and many, many others.

This week Croi have announced details of two of their most special trip, to New York and Inisboffin.

Seona Joyce of Croi takes up the story;

For Runners and Walkers, the ING New York City Marathon is recognised as one of the world's greatest marathon experiences!

Club Person of Year

Congratulations to Maire Treasa Beatty who won the Club Person of the Year award for 2008, presented at the Athenry AC AGM on Wednesday 14th Jan. This is Maire Treasa's first year of serious running and she didn't commence actual racing until March, so her total haul of 33 races during the year represents a serious commitment to competetive racing.

The BHAA - All You Ever Wanted to Know....

The BHAA, in both Dublin and Cork do fantastic work for runners and yet can remain unknown to many athletes outside of their immediate catchment areas. If you have the opportunity I'd highly recommend that you take part in one of the many superb races they organise each year. I cut my own running teeth in BHA races in Dublin and can vouch that there's a place for everyone and anyone at a BHAA race. They're competitive and relaxed, fun and serious, on road and across country.

Mick Rice Gone Native

The image that Mick Rice hoped would never see the light of day has been exclusively published on the Athenry AC web site this afternoon.

Mick Rice has gone native and this is the proof - wearing his very special race director's hat(!) on the morning of the recent Fields of Athenry 10KM Road Race.

For a former city slicker to be caught in a cart carrying a pile of bales will be the ultimate blow to his very carefully constructed city-slicker image.

It will take a few more years before he'll starting speaking like an East Galway native but it will happen, mark my words.
