Loughrea Athletic Club “Athletics Weekend”

We have news of great plans for a weekend of athletics related 'fun and games' from our neighbours at Loughrea AC.

Fun Events around the Town of Loughrea on Friday night - full list of events to follow

  • Seminar titled “Train Hard Race Easy” taking place on 26th of Sept @ 6pm at the Lough Rea Hotel & Spa
  • Annual 5 mile Road Race 27th of September @ 2pm
  • Claregalway 10KM results

The recent Clare River Harriers (CRH) A.C. 10 Kilometres (6.2 miles) road race in Claregalway was a tremendous success with over 200 runners taking to the roads around Claregalway.

This race also incorporated the Galway County AAI 10K Road championships for 2009. The race was sponsored by the Central Tavers in Loughgeorge, Claregalway. In memory of the late Brendan Gavin of Loughgeorge, Clare River Harriers donated 5 euro from each entry to the Galway Hospice and this year's race contributed €1,175 to Galway Hospice.

    Congratulations Olive

We were all absolutely thrilled to hear of Olive Loughnane's silver medal success in Berlin at the World Athletics Championships. It's so exciting to realise that two Galwegians, and such close neighbours, are representing both their clubs and their country on the world athletics stage with such distinction.

    Jane Ann on Form

Jane Ann Healy established another personal best on the roads in Dublin this weekend with a strong performance in the Frank Duffy Ten Mile Road Race. Fresh from a very strong performance in the streets of Galway Jane Ann carried that same form into the Dublin race and delivered a personal best time of 1:06:22 which was good enough for 9th senior woman in a huge field of 6,000 entries.

    The Long Way Round

Over the last few months, 3 Athenry AC members have been deep in training for their toughest adventure yet. Last Saturday, Ray O' Connor, Mick Rice and Valerie Glavin took on 100 miles of Connemara roads in the Connemara 100.

A number of other members were there to organise, support and cheer them on.

Ray managed 42 miles, but a failure to keep food down forced him to withdraw.

In his first attempt at the distance, Mick posted an outstanding time of 14:31:53, averaging 9 minute miles, and even a negative split.
