Back To The 'Country'

It's cross-country time again!

Time to get muck up to our oxsters running around in fields. True, cross-country isn't absolutely everyone's idea of a day out, but it can be great fun. The Co Galway cross-country races will take place next Sunday week, the 4th of October, in Tuam, and we hope that many Athenry AC members will take part to support their club teams. There are seperate men's and women's races and competition at grades from junior, novice and up to senior and veterans and so there should be something for everyone.

Maurice Clarke 09 Cork Marathon Visual Report

Maurice slogging it out...

Find enclosed as good a visual report(!) of a marathon as you are ever likely to see. I met Maurice the day after Cork in the Westwood Hotel after the Dangan leg of the Galway May 5KM series and happened to flick through the Cork Marathon programme he had with him. He had just annotated the centre pages i.e. map of the course and thought his notes were both very insightful and also gave a good idea how the race had gone for him personally. After much discussion between his agent and mine, I obtained exclusive rights to the page, which is reproduced in the PDF attached to this article. Maurice's own comments follow presently:

Mick Molloy 10KM Race Result

Race Start

The inaugural running of the Mick Molloy Classic 10K took place in Oughterard Saturday, July 18th 2009. We were honoured to have the great man himself not only start the race but be on hand to present the prizes to the various category winners afterwards. Judging by the amount of people lining up to meet Mick, he must have had a fairly sore hand by the end of the evening!

Clifden 10KM Race Result

Clifden Lifeboat

A crowd of about 100 turned out to take part in the 2nd Clifden Lifeboat 10k race on Sunday 13th September 2009.

Entries came from all over Galway, as well as Mayo, Cork, Kildare, Dublin & Tyrone with two even turning up from the USA.

The weather was very different from last year, with clear blue skies. This made for a challenging course, harder as the temperatures were up into the 20s by race start at 2pm.

Another race was added to the burgeoning Galway road race calendar on All-Ireland Football Final Sunday last out in Castledaly. Marguerite Brady of APA and her merry band of helpers must be very happy how the race turned out, raising nearly E1000 in the process.
