Fields of Athenry 10km - Back on track - Again!

Fields of Athenry 10km

The Fields of Athenry will now take place on Sunday 24th January at 1:30pm.

Registration will be open from 12 noon in Presentation college Athenry.

The kids race will take place at 12:30, runners should gather outside the Byne Mech factory.

We have to use a slightly modified course that we used for the National 10km race a few years ago. A map is available here;

As a few people have deferred their entry, a small number of entries will be available on the day on a first-come, first-served basis.

In the event of inclement weather, we will have a course inspection at 10:30am.
If the event is to be rescheduled, we will update the website, and issue texts to participants immediately.

Unfortunatey we've had to cancel the race for today.
Ice on both the course and approach roads is not melting fast enough.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but safety is priority.

The race has been PROVISIONALLY rescheduled for Sunday January 3rd at 1:30pm.
The date is dependant on race insurance and weather [obviously!].

Your entry is automatically valid for  the rescheduled date.

For Athenry AC members, an organisational meeting will be held on Wednesday 30th, 8pm, Raheen Woods Hotel.

Bring on the 10k slog and the tight Speedos - Irish Times

Keith Duggan, GAA writer with the Irish Times, gives a mention to the Fields of Athenry 10km in todays column.

The race itself was not really a race – some guy won it in 29 minutes and everyone else trundled along behind, exhibiting a flabbergasting range of running styles. A few K in a man in a vintage – and stretched – Tipperary GAA shirt went by. He was, as the bespoke people say, a larger gentleman and the shirt may have been a trophy from his distant minor days, when he was a fleet and underweight 17 year-old with prospects. He held his head up high, as if he was hoping to receive some sign from the sun. But this was Galway, man, where there hasn’t been sun since about 1975. Still, he retained something of the old speed because he sort of glided by our group.

Memories of Loughrea

Craughwell-based athletics photographer John O'Connor has just shared another set of his fabulous photographs with us which we have now uploaded to our photo gallery. The set in question was taken at the Loughrea Athletics Seminar and Road Race in September this year and there are some beauties amongst them. If you were in Loughrea this year, or even if you weren't, they're well worth a look.

The sharp end - Preview of the Elite Field

12 months later and last year's winners look like the athletes to beat in this year's running of the Fields of Athenry 10km.

Gary Thornton has had a mixed year, with some fantastic performances over the county, finishing 4th in the Inter-clubs in March and 6th in the inter-counties, narrowly missing out on a place on the Irish team that competed at the European cross county championships.

Hop On The Bus Gus...!

It might be of interest to anyone travelling from Galway City to the Fields of Athenry 10k on St.Stephen's Day that Galway City Harriers are organising a bus to the race on that day. Aside from saving the planet, taking the bus helps out with parking congestion and allows you to relax after the race with a Christmas drink, if that's your kind of thing.

The bus is open to all and the fare will be small, so don't be shy.
