Kilmovee 10km - The Flattest 10k in Ireland?

I recently had the pleasure of cycling the course for the forthcoming inaugural Kilmovee 10k Road Race which is being organised by members of the local GAA club (in association with Mayo AC) in support of some very worthy local charities. What struck me was that, as well as it being a particularly beautiful route, it was perhaps the flattest 10k course I'd ever seen. The organisers have put a great deal of effort into ensuring a well organised and successful first running of this race and it deserves our support.

A Race Report on The Craughwell 10 Miler

The Craughwell 10 was for me, more than just a race. I haven’t raced since September 2009 due to a stress fracture and, after a disappointing Cork Marathon in June; you begin to ask yourself, “Why do I do this?”

Gold for Athenry at Craughwell 10 miler

Craughwell AC raised the bar in terms of race organisation with a fantastic 10 mile race yesterday, an event destined to become a classic.

It was a great day out for Athenry AC to our nearest neighbours. There was even a special sign welcoming the over 50 memebers of the club who toed the line yesterday. There was great performances all around, with many members using this event as a step up in distance before tackling the Connemara half mathon next month.

A Cause Close To Our Hearts...

Runners are often called upon to get involved with fund raising programmes for various good causes in a way that perhaps other sports people are not. Like most other situations such expectations can be viewed either as a difficulty or as an opportunity. What often makes the difference between one view and the other is the closeness to ‘home’ of the good cause in question. One cause that is very close to the hearts Athenry members is providing for the needs of people with Cystic Fibrosis.

Athenry claim silver medals at National Senior Cross Country

On the famed Munich lap in the Phoenix Park, Brian Bruton lead Athenry AC home to silver medals in Grade C at the Senior Cross Country. This was a tough race with a competitive, if small, field, and toward the head of affairs was GCH's own Gary Thornton. We all know locally Gary was in great form after a sub 30 performance at the Fields of Athenry 10km, and now his form over the winter is no secret across the country. Congrats on a fine silver medal from all at Athenry AC [and thanks for the encouragement as you lapped me!]

John O'Connor's Photos of the Fields of Athenry - 2009 Edition

The 2009 running of the Fields of Athenry 10km road race eventualy took place just a few short weeks ago - in 2010. For many of us this race is a milestone in the running calendar. We look back on previous editions to see how the race has evolved, and hopefully, improved with each passing year. One thing that hasn't changed much over the years is the benign presence of John O'Connor, an accomplished runner himself, with his trusty cameras. We have been delighted over the years with John's contribution to our 10k, and many other events around the county.

We Can Has Run Now?*

Lil is firstly my dad’s dog. She’s secondly, and in a small way, mine – I have a unique selling point that my dad can never match, despite their years of teaming around together – I take her out running.
