National Half Marathon / 07 Aug 2016 / 08:30 a.m.

Although most of us relish the challenge of a tough race, the 4:30 a.m alarm call was greeted with little enthusiasm. By the time the porridge was consumed and we had hit the M6 the early start was quickly forgotten as the focus turned to the task in hand.

The Rock "n" Roll national half marathon is run on a pretty demanding course with the last 5 miles through the undulating Phoenix Park. Race morning was humid with a strong breeze, not a day for particularly fast times but more of a fitness assessment for those running a marathon later in the year.

Great to see such a strong club contingent running on the day:

Jane Ann Meehan 1:22

Sinead Martin 1:46

Edwina Coen 2:11

Fiona Doughan 1:52

Marguerite Wilkinson 1:57

Kate Gavin 2:11

John Killion 1:48

David Meehan 1:25

Kieran Walsh 1:41

Gearoid Rohan 1:22

Chris Deakin 1:26

Mark Mitchell 1:35

Sean Flaherty 1:49

Kevin Devane 1:56

Liam Mycroft 1:56

Some cracking personal achievements from Athenry AC members. Jane Ann ran close to the national medal finishing a superb 4th overall. Also the senior women's team of Fiona Doughan, Sinead Martin and Jane Ann Meehan finished a very credible 4th in the overall team event. Honest day at the office for most, in particular the uphill section as you entered the Park. These 2 miles were a test of stamina into a stiff wind but thankfully we all survived to race again!
