Athenry Juvenile AC Athletes will be taking to the road this coming weekend for the Uneven Ages National Cross Country Championship which will be held on Sunday 15th December in Waterford.   Athenry AC will have a number of teams qualified to represent the club at this All Ireland event as well as a number of individual athletes who will be running for Galway as a result of strong individual performances at the Connacht Championship.

In the U11 Girls championship, we will be well represented by Ellie Cronin, Kaci Moran, Caitlin Mullen, Chloe Quirke, Ciara Griffin and Saoirse Healey. In the U11 Boys, Fearghus Deeley will hope to repeat his very strong showing at the Connacht championship. We will have another stong girls team in the U13 race where Caolfhinn Hennessy, Sarah Gilhooley, Katie Brogan, Freya Bohan and Aoibhe Deeley will represent Athenry. The U13 Boys Boys race will include the Athenry team of Brandon Lee, Christian Mullen, Fabian Mangan and Shea Hennessy, while Shannen Lee will run for Galway in the U16 Girls race.

Our Juvenile athletes have done very well to qualify for a national event and we wish them the very best of luck on Sunday 15th.

An interesting development in the UK---under new rules to be introduced by UK Athletics (coming into operation on April 1, 2014) athletes who run in transferred numbers in UKA licensed road races without permission are to be disqualified. Both they and those who pass on the number will be subject to disciplinary action via the appropiate national organisation. Apart from insurance/medical reasons, unauthorised number-swapping is common and the bane of many organisers. The Association of Running  Clubs (ARC), which licenses most of the races which are not held under UKA rules, is also to look at clamping down on number-swapping.
