“I know several guys in the club are quite familiar with Jack Daniels Running Formula. In it he talks a lot about the VDOT concept. VDOT is his way of approximating VO2 max based on race performance and of nailing down various training paces based on same, i.e. Easy, Marathon, Threshold, Interval, Repetitions pace.

This is a link to Jim Fiore's site where you can download a VDOT calculator - a simple piece of software that you can put on your desktop and use to come up with training paces based on recent race performances. Calculating training paces in this way is still very much 'rule of thumb' stuff but can take a good deal of the guess work out of your training. The calculator also predicts race times over other distances based on recent race performance, as well as calculate race pace.”
