Athenry AC has a long-standing association with Croi, The West of Ireland Cardiology Foundation, and their Event Co-Ordinator Seona Joyce has been in touch looking for volunteers to run some of the summer's big races on their behalf. If you're thinking of taking part in these events anyway, why not avail of the chance to be part of the Croi team.

Seona writes;

We are looking for people to participate in the Streets of Galway on our behalf.

The Great North Run is one of the world's greatest half marathons (13.1 miles). The race starts at 10.10 on Sunday, October 5th just north of Newcastle City Centre, and finishes at Cliff Top Park, South Shields, a popular seaside resort. The course is slightly undulating, but very fast. The local 'Geordies' give an outstandingly warm welcome each year to the visiting Irish runners. There is no time limit so you can run, jog or walk the course. All participants must be at least 17 years old on race day.

Located on England’s northeast coast, between Yorkshire and Scotland, Newcastle Upon Tyne is one of Britain’s most appealing destinations. A former industrial town and shipbuilding centre, the city has undergone a major transformation in the past decade, with architectural masterpieces like the Millennium Bridge and a revitalised Quayside. It is home to the famous Magpies (Newcastle F.C.) and arch rivals Sunderland, managed by Roy Keane.

We are offering an Accommodation and Entry Only package for this event. This is because the airlines flying to Newcastle are low cost carriers and do not offer ‘Group Flexibility’. The tour package comprises a two night stay, Friday & Saturday or Saturday & Sunday. Accommodation which is offered on a twin-share basis (single rooms are available at a supplement), is based in the Express by Holiday Inn, Newcastle – a new hotel which offers modern accommodation in a great location, just 5 minutes walk from Central metro station. It is just minutes from St James’ Park football stadium and the race start is only a few minutes away by metro.

This is a fundraising event, where the fundraising target is set to ensure that Croí secures at least 100% above costs. All proceeds directly contribute to the fight against heart disease. All funds from this project will support the Regional Cardiac Surgical Centre for the West of Ireland.
