Kudos to the nearly 190 hardy souls who braved the elements for yesterday’s 2nd annual Coldwood 4 mile race. Starting & finishing at the National School on the N6, the heavy winds didn’t prevent some decent racing with both the men’s & women's course records falling on the day.

Jason Broderick was first home in a time of 22.01, a new course record by 33 seconds. He finished 15 seconds ahead of GCH’s Fintan Hyland with Jerome De Biz a further 2 minutes back. Mick Rice was first Athenry AC runner home & narrowly missed out on a podium finish in 5th place, less than 30 seconds off 3rd.

The ladies race was won by Sharon Cleere in 25.47, a massive 2 minute chunk off the course record from last year. She was followed home 30 seconds later by Helen Corbett with Lisa McTigue a further minute back.

Just shy of twenty Athenry members showed up yesterday with noticeable performances from Pat McDonagh & Ronan McCarthy, both of whom are showing some great form early in the year. Some members were using this race to finish off their weekends ‘long run’ with Maeve, Siobhan & Deirdre all putting in around 10 miles prior to the race start in preparation for the Donadea 50k next month.

A welcoming cup of tea and lots of refreshments greeted the runners at the finish and very welcome it was too.

Congrats to Harry Monson and his helpers on a very good event, which was a fund-raiser for the school.
