Two races in the Kinvara Rock and Road series and the classic Ballycotton 10 brought great runs out of Athenry runners at the weekend.

Two of our girls - Sineád Foran and Sineád Brody - did us proud in the Kinvara half marathon by finishing one and two (provisionally) among senior women, registering chip times of 1:33:47 and 1:40:17. (Three women from the F40 category did split the two in finish times). In the same race, Tony Killarney also did really well to take the gold (provisionally) in the M50 with 1:30:40, while Gearoid Rohan did a great 1:28:50.

It seems like Noel Fox and Sineád Foran took it in turn to follow in each other's slipstreams while registering exactly the same time. Who says Kenyans are the only ones who can do that? Congratulations to John Langan and George Livanos for running what seems like pb's also with 1:33:54 and 1:40:56.

In all, 13 Athenry athletes ran in the Kinvara half while another 5 ran in the 10k race (currently incorrectly showing Philip Magnier as M60).

The Ballycotton 10 miles used to bring Athenry athletes down to East Cork in their droves but now we have the Craughwell 10 and other local races to distract us and it seems several of our members cried off the race very late for a variety of reasons including injury. Nevertheless, three runners competed and will be pleased with their performances: Lyall Guiney (60:28 and 112nd place), Ray Somers (62:34 and 155th), and James Lundon (71:26 and 558th).

The collossal difference in placing between Lyall and James - 446 places but spread over a mere 11 minutes - tells a tale of the incredible standard that still exists in Ballycotton. Thanks to those athletes for taking the time and effort to represent themselves and their club at a high prestige race.
