The fourth Boston Scientific 5km road race took place last night (Wednesday, July 13th) in glorious sunshine in Maree. Over 220 runners took to the roads - from Boston Scientific, local running clubs (Athenry AC, Galway City Harriers, Craughwell AC, Clare River Harriers among others) and Ohio!! The race raised over €3400 for Cope, BSC's chosen charity of the year.

Now established as an annual event on the local running calendar, the race was strongly contested amongst some of Galway's top runners. The senior men's prize was taken once again, for an astonishing fourth year in a row, by Boston Scientific's Gerry Ryan, who held off strong competition from Matt Bidwell of Galway City Harriers to cross the line in a superb time of 15:12. The women's race was won by Thelma McMahon in a time of 19:57.

Boston Scientific was well represented in the main prize categories, with Seán Hanley, Ruthann Sheehan (Athenry AC and BSC) and Patricia McAfee also placing in the male veteran, female veteran and senior female categories, respectively.

The first placed Boston Scientific competitors (excluding those who received prizes in the main race categories) were: Diarmuid Quill (19:31) and Jude Donnellan (22:43).

Ed's Note:

Brian Bruton caused timing havoc by rocking up 5 minutes before the race with no number but redeemed himself by stumping up for race entry afterwards, and he did get an official placing; luckily we could see that famous running style coming down the road and were able to pencil him into the results!
