Race Headquarters

The Fields of Athenry 10k Road Race has grown over the last few years into quite a busy race. Over the last four years the organisers have been extremely lucky that St.Mary's GAA Club in Athenry have made their fine clubhouse available to us as a race headquarters. This fine facility with it's car-parking, changing rooms and other facilities has been an invaluable assistance to the event. As the race has grown, particularly with the number of athletes hitting almost four-hundred last year, we have examined ways of further improving the facilities on offer to participants in this event. With all of that in mind the race will this year be based in the Presentation College in the heart of Athenry town. There should be ample room for car-parking and preparation in advance of the race and for changing afterwards. Of course we are very thankful that this headquarters has been made available to us for the occasion.

Race Route Unchanged

The actual route for the race will remain unaltered, we'll just be starting and finishing at a different point on the same road loop that we've used in previous years. We'll have a detailed map of the course online soon. The change in the start line will also enable us to finish the race under the historic arch in the middle town, which should make for some great finish-line photo's.

More 'Top' Shirts on Offer

Another change we've made this year concerns the much sought-after t-shirts that have been awarded to the top finishers in previous years. For the last two races an especially commisioned t-shirt has been presented to the first thirty athletes accross the finish line on the day. These shirts have come to represent a reward for a particularly strong performance on the day and are in addition to the race souvenir awarded to all race entrants. This year, in recognition of a growth in numbers we've extended the number of 'top' shirts awarded to fifty. Even with this change it will probably prove quite a challenge to claim one of these shirts, requiring a finish in the top 15-20% of the field depending on entry numbers.

Walkers Welcome!

Although our event has seen some fine racing performances in previous years it's certainly not only for the gifted athlete. This event offers runners and walkers of all abilities and fitness levels a chance to shake off any seasonal lethargy with a brisk tour of the countryside around Athenry town. So - if you feel like doing something worthwhile on St.Stephen's Day next why not take part, you'll certainly be most welcome.

Hopefully We'll See You There...

Sorry for taking so long to clarify this but I wanted to be sure I got it right. A junior for the purposes of this year is defined as being 19 or under as of 31/12/06. That is 19th birthday in 2006 or younger.

Hope that clarifies things...
