Event Date

Mayo AC's 2008 Road Race League, sponsored by C & C Cellular, will begin with the Carramore 10k on Saturday May 17th. This will the first chance for participants to pick up League points (first 25 men/women finishers) following the postponement of the Ballyhaunis 8k race which will be re-scheduled - more on that as soon as the new date is confirmed. The Carramore 10k is a firm favourite on the Western athletics calendar, as it is a fast one lap rural course. There is good community spirit and lots of local help in support of the main organiser Christy Heneghan (087-1259435). This race has a strong fund-raising tradition and the main charity is the Mayo-Roscommon Hospice.

The race is expected to be highly competitive, with top club athletes from around the province in contention. Mayo AC's senior men and women have shown great form in races already this year, evidenced by the number of top finishes, personal bests, and national medals. John Byrne - winner at Carramore last time - has been in great form recently and will be leading the way. He will be strongly challenged by senior clubmates Anthony Devaney, Timmy Glavey, and TJ McHugh making a welcome return after injury. Last year's Women's League winner, Mary Gleason (Mayo AC) will be hoping to improve on her good start to the season at the National 10k in Athenry. Regina Casey (GCH) has been first woman finisher in the two Galway 5k series races so far, following her win in the Connemara Half Marathon.

Also in contention will be Catherine Conway (Mayo AC) who has been steadily improving at this distance recently. The age category sections are always keenly contested too, so there is an opportunity there for everyone to achieve, and more important to enjoy.

Entries (€10) will be taken from 4.30pm in the Race HQ at Community Centre.

The 10k will start at 6pm. There will be a 4 mile walk also at 6pm on a separate course.

Refreshments and prizegiving afterwards in race HQ.

Prizes will be: first three senior men and women; first two men o40 and o50; first two women o35 and o45; 1st junior man, 1st junior woman.

Carrramore is located in south Mayo just off the R331, about half-way between Ballinrobe and Hollymount.
