Brian and Alan ... The Boys Are Back In Town!

Brian and Alan ... The Boys Are Back In Town!

On a busy weekend for athletics in the "West" there were two particularly fine performances from Athenry runners. Paul McNamara jumped into the Western Regional 3,000m Senior Championships at Dangan Track in Galway at short notice. Paul made a late decision to compete despite having completed a particularly arduous training session only twenty-four hours previously and came home clear of Neil Higgins and Alan Kelly. Paul covered the distance in 8:37 a time well outside his personal best but with which he was quite happy on the day. The Championships in Dangan were a great success being very well attended and taking place under warm summer skies.

On the roads Athenry had three warriors in action in Claremorris for their 8Km road race which was part of the Mayo Road Racing League. Prolific road racer Alan Burke posted yet another personal best, his umpteenth of recent times, with a 29:23 timing. Johnny O’Connor also ran well, breaking the 30 minute barrier on a warm muggy evening which was completely unsuitable for fast times. Pick of the Athenry bunch though on the evening was Brian O’Connor who continued his rapid improvement of recent times to place fourth overall. Brian covered the 8km course in 27:38, once again a personal best. Congratulations Brian.

It appears from media reports that Paul Hession didn’t make it to the start line at the weekend despite having been selected to represent Ireland in the Europa Cup in Slovakia. We hope all is well with Paul and have no doubt that there’s better to come for him sooner rather than later.

Mick, you missed out!

Perfect weather and a course that must be only just 5 miles let me take 3.5 mins of my PB [4 mins better that same course last year!]

Great weather for running.
Hopefully I can can keep the momentum going in Bilboa [The 'A' is silent] ...

A Full Report will follow when I get some results, but for the record, Gary Doherty and Peter Lowney also both wore the Maroon and White with distinction.
