The Valiant Threesome

Three intrepid Athenry AC marathoners braved tough conditions in Luton today to complete that town's marathon. Peter Delmer just ducked under the three hour barrier to post 2:59:52. Peter had passed the 25 mile marker in 2:50:00 and so obviously found the last few yards tough going. John O'Connor was next home for the maroon and white in just over 3:43, a fine performance given his recently interrupted training. His brother Ray O'Connor completed his 27th marathon and once again made it home in under four hours posting 3:56. Congratulations to all three.

The race was run in very blustery conditions although the threatened rain held off in the end. The course included three loops around 'scenic' Luton and was a tough hilly course with plenty of obstacles for the marathoners to navigate on their was around. Despite being a tough challenge for all concerned the event was very well organised and facilities for athletes and spectators were superb.
