Many of you will already have heard that the athletics track in Dangan will close soon for a major overhaul.

AAI County Board Secretary PJ Coyle of GCH told us earlier today;

“I just got confirmation yesterday that the contractors are moving into the track on Monday 11th June. This means that it will be officially a building site and there will be no admittance to the track. I had hoped that we could use the track for a week or two until the surface was being taken up but Health & Safety will not allow any activity on a building site. I know some people will have the urge to climb the fence and continue training but please don't enter the site.

The old track around the hockey pitch will be available for training. The track should be fully operational again by the beginning of September.”

On completion of the work we’ll all have a vastly improved facility to avail of and I’m sure we’ll all agree that being unable to train or compete there for a few short weeks is only a small price to pay for that.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to PJ, Tom Finnegan and their colleagues on the Regional Sports Centre Management Committee for their foresight in planning and co-ordinating this work.

As far as I know, the sand track, around the hockey pitches will be used.
