Congratulations to all Athenry AC members who performed at the Connacht National Schools cross country in Ballina. This event is one of the most competitive fixtures in the calendar for our young athletes and is one of the few opportunities these young athletes get to shine to their school colours.

Athenry AC athlete Marie Touhy of St. Oliver Plunkett’s National School in Newcastle, Athenry (1st from left in attached picture), was the star of the show from a Galway perspective, winning the individual title in the Girls 5th & 6th class race, while Killeeneen NS claimed team honours in the same race with a comfortable margin of victory of over 20 points.

First race of the day was the Girls 3rd & 4th class race won by Mayo athlete Aisling Forkan. Top Galway athletes in this race were Rachel O’Brien of Cregmore NS and Athenry AC, Ciara de Graoin of Scoil Ui Cheithearnaigh and Sinead Treacy of Carabane NS. Cregmore NS were first Galway team home in 4th place overall, with Craughwell NS in 5th and Gaelscoil De hIde in 12th. Rathcormac of Sligo captured the team gold.

The Boys 3rd & 4th Class race saw a win for Creagh NS in Ballinasloe, representing Co. Roscommon, with Scoil Iosaf Naofa in 2nd and Craughwell NS in 3rd. Scoil Phadraic Naofa were 5th team rounding off a great Galway performance. Jason Kenny and Colin Cottton, both representing Creagh NS, Ballinasloe, and Jamie Spellman of Scoil Iosaf Naofa were the highest finishing Galway individuals.

Marie Touhy led the way in the 5th & 6th class Girls race, with Dearbhla Fox of St. Mary’s in the silver medal position and Annie May Bourne of Scoil an Chroi Naofa, Ballinasloe in 4th to make 3 Galway athletes in the top 4. Killeeneen NS captured the team title with Anna Lane, Nicole Brennan, Claire Ryder, Rachel Mullins, Amy Hoban and Sarah Mullins forming the team. Scoil Ui Cheithearnaigh captured the bronze medal with Craughwell NS in 4th.

Creagh NS captured the 5th & 6th class boy’s team title with Craughwell NS in 3rd and Scoil Iosaf Naofa in 10th place. Top individuals from a Galway perspective were Eoin McCormack and Ronan Daly, representing Creagh NS, Colm O’hAodha of Scoil Fhursa, Michael Daly of St. Mary’s Mountbellew and Nicholas Sheehan of Scoil Iosaf Naofa.
