The Galway Men's and Women's county teams achieved silver medals in the 'B' category of today's AAI All Ireland Inter County Cross Country Championships in the Curragh. It was the women's team in particular who shone as Galway fielded their first team in this competition for some years. The women's team displayed a confidence and aggression that belied their relative inexperience at this level to bring home All-Ireland Silver medals. Athenry AC was represented on the team by our very own Ann Carter who is reigning County Galway Cross Country Champion and also County 10k Champion on the roads. The team was ably managed by 'chef d'équipe' Bernie Kelly from GCH and comprised of

Ann Burke (Ballinasloe & District)

Orla Ni Mhuircheartaigh (GCH)

Bernie Kelly (GCH)

Eve Daly (GCH)

Deirdre Brophy (GCH)

Congratulations to each and every member of the medal winning team.

The Galway men's team was depleted somewhat by injury and the unavailability of some experienced athletes. Not withstanding these difficulties the team ran superbly well to also take silver team medals in the 'B' category of the team competition. First Galway man home was GCH's Gary Thornton in 11th place with Athenry's Paul McNamara was close behind in 18th. It's expected that these two athletes will renew their keen rivalry in the Fields of Athenry 10k Road Race on St.Stephen's day next. With two wins apiece in the race it's anyone's guess which one, if any, will make it a hat-trick of wins in four weeks time.

The Galway Men's Team was;

Paul McNamara (Athenry AC)

Martin Corcoran (Craughwell AC)

Feargal Geraghty (GCH)

Tommy Joe Whyte (Tuam)

Brian Bruton (Athenry)

Gary Thornton (GCH)

Ruaidhri Geraghty (GCH)
