Now that the turkey has been eaten and we’re all getting back to some sort of routine, it might be nice to consider what races are coming up over the next month of so.

First up we have County Galway Indoor Championships. This even comprises races at all age levels, including senior, and takes place at the Nenagh track next Saturday. Traditionally this fixture has been under-supported by senior athletes but deserves better. It’s an exhilarating experience flashing around the tight bends of the indoor track. If you have the time, why not support your county indoor champs?

Next up it’s the Tuam New Year 8k Road Race which has been a great favourite of Athenry athletes for the last few years. This is a great race with a friendly atmosphere and some deadly rivalries. A fast course around the town and a juvenile race for our budding stars are only two of the added attractions. Well, well worth the modest entry fee.

Last but certainly not least locally in January is the Connaught Senior and Junior Cross Country Championships at Dartfield Equestrian Centre Loughrea. This venue was a great hit this year at the Galway Cross Country Championships and many will look forward to a return trip. One of your last chances to slash around in the muck before global warming takes grip.

Hi Mick,

Happy new year to you and good look with your training. Have a look at www.imra.ie. There are some nice races planned over the course of the year that might suit you and your fellow Athenry runners e.g. the Wicklow way trail / ultra would be right up your street (pity its only a week after the Conn marathon), but also Croagh Patrick / Ben Gorm later in the summer.

Regards,
