A Report by John O'Connor

A group of Athenry AC members and friends headed to the wonderful landscape of Connemara last Saturday morning to shake the legs and get a bit of real training marked down in the log books. The arranged bus was full of smiling faces at 8:30 as it left the Westwood and headed for the wilds. There was various drop off points planned along the Connemara route starting at Lough Inagh with the idea of everyone finishing at Maam cross at mid-day.

13.1 miles was the call of the day for a lot of the group with some opting for a challenging 10 miles and others taking on the real distance of 26.2 miles. The monring sun shone down and a wind blew twisting around the mountains as the 25 or so runners patted the quiet roads clocking off the easy paced miles.

Everyone made it back to Maam Cross without much difficulty proving that they are in good shape for the busy Summer season of racing ahead. Our bus filled up with the same morning smiles (a healthy sign of a healthy club) before we were on our way back to the Boat Inn in Oughterard for the much welcomed feed of sambos and colas.

What a great way to celebrate Spring!

Fantastic day out - it could never be that windy on race day could it?

Special congrats to Niall who ran his first ever ten mile run - he did it straight into a strong headwind, up the Hell of the West on a dodgy knee. After that anything's possible.
