Athenry Juveniles athletes had a super day recently at the Galway Indoor Track and Field Championship 2013 in Nenagh. Many of our young athletes had been training very hard over the winter months turning up for training in all weathers and on dark cold evenings and they fully deserved the great success they enjoyed in Nenagh. All told, Athenry athletes brought home 15 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals, which was a fantastic achievment for a squad of 30 athletes. Well done to you all – you all did Athenry proud!

Gold medal winners on the day were Geordan Mangan Boys U11 long jump, Aubrey OBrien U13 long jump Lydia Doyle U14 long jump Evan Quirke U16 long jump and U16 High Jump where Evan also recorded a new personal best,  Dean Tracey U13 high jump, Matthew Tracy U15 High jump, Freya Bohan U12 High Jump,  Laoise Collins U15 Shot putt, Lydia Doyle U14  60 metre hurdles. Brandon Lee U 13 60 metre hurdles, U13 60 metre sprint, and U13 600 metres. Brandon also won gold with the U13 boys relay team , with team mates Dean Tracey, Aubrey O’Brien  Ruairi Collins, and James Cunniffe, meaning he brought home four gold medals from four events – a super achievement. Niall Kenny took gold in the U16/U17 800 metres. Well done to all our county champions!

Silver medal winners on the day included Sophie O’Brien U10 long jump, Aoife Wall, U10 60m. Mac Murphy U16 High Jump, Shannen Lee U15 60m hurdles, and also U15 800 metres, Aubrey O’ Brien U13 60 m hurdles, Evan Quirke U16/17 60 m hurdles, Calum Healy U10 60 m, Freya Bohan U12 600 metres, Ruairi Collins U12 600 metres, U10 boys relay team Calum Healey Fearghus Deeley Mikey Kelly Adam Molloy and Finn McIntyre, and U11 boys relay team Patrick Cronnolly Geordan Mangan Ivan Power Calum Healey and Luke Burke.

Bronze Medal winners included Fearghus Deeley U10 Long Jump, Freya Bohan U12 Long jump, Aubrey O’Brien U13 High Jump, Ruairi Collins U12 High Jump, Sarah Gilhooley U13 60m hurdles, Matthew Treacey U15 60m hurdles, Mac Murphy U16 60 metre hurdles, Aoibhe Deeley U12 60m, Niamh Hannon U14 60m, Fearghus Deeley U10  350m, U12 Girls relay team, Sinead Lyons Freya Bohan Aoibhe Deeley Ciara McDonagh and Saoirse Healey and U14 Girls 4x 200 m relay team Lydia Doyle Niamh Hannon Aishling Kenny and Rebecca Ruane.

In total there were around 400 athletes competing at Nenagh so competition was very tough. Other Athenry Athletes who performed well on the day included Aoife Wall, Conor Knight, Darragh Gilhooley, Caoimhe Rohan, Laoise O’Shea, Michael Cronnolly, Robert Noone, Colm Freeney, James Cummins, Zoe Griffin, and Kaci Moran.  On a very busy day, we managed to capture only some of the action on camera and there are lots of photos uploaded onto the Athenry Juvenile AC facebook page.

We can now look forward to the evenings becoming brighter and lots of good healthy fun at our training sessions at Athenry Tech gym on a Monday night 7-9pm and in Raheen pitch beside the tennis courts on a Wednesday night 7-8 pm. It is a great way for youngsters to get healthy and make new friends in a safe and welcoming environment.
