A number of Athenry juvenile athletes travelled to a wet and windy venue at Calry Sligo last weekend to compete in the Connacht Even Ages Cross Country Championship. All our athletes were representing Galway rather than their club as we did not have sufficient athletes to enter club teams. In the Connacht championship the first six finishers for Galway are awarded county medals if the county finishes in the top three, while the first ten finishers are normally asked to represent Galway in the cross country All Irelands held later in the year.

In the U16 girls race, Shannen Lee led the Galway team home and Galway took the team gold. A great performance from Shannen over 4000 metres running out of age.

Aisling Kenny and Sarah Gilhooly ran well in the U14 girls race, with Aisling finishing 5th and Sarah 7th on the Galway team. Both girls qualify to represent Galway in the All Irelands and Aishling won a silver team medal for Galway. In the U12 girls race our trio of Ciara Griffin, Aoibhe Deeley and Laura Kenny were all among the first ten Galway finishers with Ciara winning silver team medal by being the fourth Galway girl home.

In the U12 boys race Ruairi Collins and Shea Hennessy both ran well to finish in the top ten Galway finishers with Ruairi winning a gold team medal by being the third Galway boy home. Both boys qualify to represent Galway in the All Irelands.

First draft of results, subject to checking, are available below.
