Want to get faster?  Fitter?  Injury free?  Lighter?  Inspired to greater things this season?  This year Athenry AC is hosting a series of talks aimed at runners from casual to high performance, to help you prepare for the best season ever.

The talks will take place in the Raheen Woods hotel on the below dates, and promise to be both informative and entertaining.

Tuesday 7th Feb 8pm:  Run Training for Performance

This talk will be hosted by Paul MacNamara, regional development officer for Athletics Ireland, former elite athlete, 2008 Edinburgh marathon winner and of course, Athenry AC club member!  Paul will present on how to put some science behind your training plan to improve your performance to achieve a personal best in 2012.

Friday 24th Feb 7:30pm: Nutrition for Running

Barry Murray is a professional Irish sports nutritionist working with teams and elite athletes across Ireland and the UK, including Irish Olympic hopeful triathlete Gavin Noble.  His attitude to nutrition is not just about carb intake but strongly focussed on nutrients and his recommendations and advice are not only geared towards improving athletic performance, but more importantly, general health.  He is a keen runner and is on the Irish ultramarathon team.  The talk will include a general nutrition presentation, demo on how to make your own drinks and gels and a Q&A session.

Tuesday 6th March 8pm: Injury Prevention and Strength Training

Jane Ann Meehan is a chartered physiotherapist and MSc in Sports Medicine, Athenry AC club member and talented runner, coming fourth in the Cork marathon in 2010.  In her spare time, aside from organising the club speed sets and working with the National Athletics elite squad and 2012 Olympic panel, she likes to torment our club secretary with metal objects to improve his core strength.  She will present on the importance of strength training and how to prevent injuries.

Tuesday 20th March 8pm:  The Road to ESPOO

Ever wondered whether you could run further?  Faster?  How about running for 24 hours...indoors...on a track?  Come and hear some of the stories behind our club members’ inspiring trip to ESPOO in Finland for the indoor 24 hour race in January 2011, and the tears and triumphs on the (very long) day.  Hosted by Mick Rice, club member, ultramarathoner and holder of the Connemara 100 Mile title.
