Two Athenry AC finishers on what was a very windy (almost always against us too) and extremely sunny day between Roundstone and Clifden!

CRAUGHWELL MAN RETAINS TITLE AT 2014 MARCONI HALF MARATHON, CONNEMARA

Last weekend saw the 2nd very successful running of the Marconi Half Marathon in Connemara. Glorious sunshine and near-perfect conditions greeted over 300 athletes as they lined up at Gurteen Beach near Roundstone for what is turning out to be one of the marquee events on the running calendar.

The route took runners through some of the most amazing scenery in the west of Ireland, along the coast into Roundstone and then turning west across the vast wilderness of the Bog Road before arriving in Clifden to a large crowd of cheering supporters. This year again saw a good mixture of Irish participants complimented by a sizeable number of foreign entrants, giving a very cosmopolitan buzz and feel to the day.

First across the line was last years winner Ollie Mullins from Craughwell in a time of 1:21:23, but he had to work hard to retain his title as Des Tremble closely followed him home just 12 seconds later. In the women’s category, the victory went to Meredith Mahoney from Brooklyn, New York in 1:36:00.

Commenting on the success of this year’s event, race director Thomas King said, “We are delighted with the turnout and fantastic reception the race has received since its launch. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from participants, and the large numbers of people staying on for the weekend are also a great boost to the local economy”.
