Duathlon Action in Athenry - Predator Style!

Duathlon Action in Athenry - Predator Style!

Report By Tony Daley (Predator Triathlon Club and Athenry AC)

The first running of this Duathlon took place in Athenry at the Raheen Woods Hotel last Sunday. The event consisted of a 5km Run to warm competitors up, a 16km Cycle ride to stretch the legs and another 5km Run to cool down on. Conditions on the day were less than perfect with a steady drizzle greeting all who had braved the weather. The event started off at 9.30am, an early start because the 10.45 Galway to Dublin train was due to cross the course at 10.55am. Those who were running late in the event would have to wait at the level crossing!

The organisers with Seb Locteau had managed to persuade some runners from Athenry A C to take part and many took up the offer. It was going to be interesting to see how their bike handling skills faired up! After the first 5km, eventual winner Ruaidhri Geraghty was first into the transition stage quickly followed by Peter Delmer and Owen Curran. Pride was definitely at stake! It was clear this was going to be taken very seriously by some. Although the bike leg had seen some of the stronger triathletes move up the field there was still pride at stake. Gary Doherty and Darragh McShane were also close to each other. Afterwards there were stories going around of frightening speeds on the bike, close shaves on bad bends, dog attacks on the back of the course. Fortunately there were no casualties and all returned home to complete the final 5km of the run.

Mick Rice however had decided not to trust his bike handling skills and was attempting to run the entire event. He said if could finish second last he would be happy. It was great to see all the running lads really enjoying themselves. Peter managed to hold off Owen and finish in 4th and 5th respectively in a time of 1 hour 10 minutes, with Gary and Darragh a few minutes behind. A truly fantastic effort by all the Athenry lads. Mick indeed finished ahead of a few stragglers and never got caught by the train, finishing in a time of 1 hour 43 minutes.

On behalf of the Predator Triathletes many thanks to the volunteers of the Athenry AC for giving their time in assisting on the day. The event will be a regular feature from now on and who knows we may have a winner from the running fraternity in the future!!
