The Galway Senior Track & Field Series wound up with a flourish last night (Thursday) with some outstanding action. Highlights of Day 3 included a highly competitive senior men's 400m, an excellent series of jumps from former Moldovan national high jump champion Igor Muntean, and a top class discus competition with the top 2 from last Sundays AAI Games battling for top honours.

All in all the series proved that their is a real appetite for track & field in the west of Ireland and that their is plenty of talent looking for a forum in which to compete. Also, this series has provided a momentum to adult athletics in the west that should see strong men's and women's Galway teams in the National Track & Field League this summer.

Unfortunately the track is out of bounds for the rest of the summer as it is to be resurfaced, but their is huge potential for this series to be repeated and expanded next season. Full results from last night attached. Photos to follow.

My top 10 highlights from the 3 and a half nights (ad hoc 10,000m race being the half) include ....

1. Mindaugus Kurcenkovas throwing the javelin 61.92m in his first outing in over a year.

2. Sean Breathnach putting the shot 15.17m in his first outing of the season.

3. Igor Muntean's 2.00m high jump in his season opener.

4. The depth in the Senior Mens 400m.

4. The turnout in the relay events which provided a great bit of fun.

5. The depth and quality of all the throws events which were greatly appreciated by all.

6. Tight finishes in Ladies and Mens 1500m.

7. Deep fields in all distance events.

8. People travelling from Tipperary, Limerick, Clare, Roscommon, Sligo and Mayo to compete.

9. The number of pb's in the 5000m.

10. The field in the 10,000m which assembled at 24 hours notice.

Thanks to all who helped out over the duration of the series. Volunteers were plentiful and willing. The future is bright!
