Another Busy Weekend!

It was another busy week for Athenry AC with over 30 members taking part in races across the country & further afield.

The fourth edition of the Athlone ¾ Marathon was held in Glasson on Sunday with 17 members toeing the line on a scenic but hilly course. Many were using this race as the last long run in their marathon schedules before they start tapering down their distances over the next three weeks. In wet & muggy conditions most found the going tough but were happy with their times & go forward to Dublin in a positive frame of mind.

Down south we had 4 members taking part in the Cork to Cobh race organised by the CBHAA. Again in similar conditions to Athlone all members were holding the pace back, with one eye on Dublin, and were happy with the day out. This race is a throwback to the races of previous years with manual timing & water stations giving out paper cups but at €10.00 for a 15mile race you will find it hard to get a better value race & is very well received each year.

The 2013 Galway Adult Cross Country Championships were held on Sunday & by all accounts a great show was put on by Loughrea. We had 4 members in the womens 4000m with Miriam Wall & Michelle Collins taking home silver & bronze medals respectively. In the men’s 6000m race we had 8 runners with Jim Leahy taking home a bronze medal.  See sets of images from the event here.

Ruthann Sheahan decided to take it easy this weekend and only ran two marathons. On Saturday Ruthann & her partner George Livanos ran the Surf & Turf marathon in Wexford where Ruthann was first woman home (Third overall) in a time of 3:30. The following day she decided to break up the long drive home & ran another marathon as part of the Kilomarathon series of races held in Kilcock, coming first overall in a time of 3:32.

Further afield in the States our club Chairperson, Deirdre Hassett, is making good use of the warmer climate to keep up her off-season (triathlon) training, placing 3rd in the Olympic Distance Mermaid Triathlon in Capitola, California. Whilst on the other side of the globe I’ve been informed that the only racing available to Mick Rice in India is trying to stay ahead of the pack of feral dogs in his local park.
